Remembering the Legacy of Blanche Elsie Sykora Dunn

December 9, 1920 – Berwyn, IL – March 9, 2021 – Omaha, NE

In the annals of history, certain individuals stand out as beacons of service and dedication. Blanche left an indelible mark through her unwavering commitment to her country and community. She lived a full and rich life filled with love, family, friendships, adventure, and service.

**Military Dedication**

Blanche wanted to do her share after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. She attended and graduated from the Naval training school for yeomen on the Oklahoma A University campus, Stillwater. Selection to this specialty school was made on the basis of the WAVES past civilian experience and her recruit training aptitude test scores. The completed course of study, which made her eligible to qualify for the petty officer rate of yeoman third class, included shorthand, typing, filing, and general Naval office procedures.

**A Woman Before Her Time**

Blanche was most proud of her WWII service as a member of the Navy WAVES. She enlisted during World War II, and served in San Francisco, CA until the war’s end. Blanche was a remarkable woman, a pioneer of women, starting with WWII.

**Leaving Behind a Lasting Legacy**

Blanche passed away at the age of 100.  Her family gives credit for her long and healthy life to her flexible, adventurous, and fun personality. While she was in home care, an officer came to visit her, to which she perked up and respectfully saluted the officer. Through her service, her dedication, and her love of country, Blanche leaves an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire women for generations to come.
